Course Reflection

I want to start by saying this class was very informative, and the unique teaching style made it a lot of fun. This was the most interactive online class I have ever taken.  A Land Remembered   was such an interesting book, and I am so happy we read it in this class. Learning about the history of Florida and the many changes it went through to become the place we live today was fascinating. A Land Remembered really put a first hand perspective on the early years of Florida. It was so much fun to follow the lives of Tobias, Zech, Sol and Toby. It was interesting to see how hurricanes, sickness, agriculture, and the relationship between whites and Indians dictated the way of life for the characters in the book. I also learned more about the industrialization of Florida. The book mentioned major roadways, railroads, and real estate tycoons that filled the area. It is crazy to think that there was a time when Miami and Orlando weren't the major cities we t...

Blog Entry with Site Visit - Camp Blanding

Image
My fiance and I visited the Camp Blanding Museum this afternoon. We were there for about 45 mins, and got to look around at all of the WWII memorabilia. They had a ton of airplanes, ambulances, and tanks in the outdoor part of the museum. Once we got inside, we were able to walk around and read about WWII and the role Camp Blanding played in it. There was a model of the German Prisoner of War camp located at Camp Blanding. It showed where the jail was, the mess hall, the chapel, the theater, and even where they played soccer. Seeing the exhibit where the soldiers slept brought to life how life must have been as a soldier there in the early 1940's.  One of the last exhibits in the museum was about the impact of women in WWII. "The most visible and powerful symbol of the war's impact on the home front was the presence of women in the workplace." (Mormino 345) This was something that we saw many pictures of, including the iconic Rosie the Riveter poster. We saw women wo...

A Land Remembered: Zech and Glenda

I have chosen to focus on the relationship between Zech and Glenda for this post. I really love romance and drama, and this relationship has plenty of both. Zech is the son of Emma and Tobias. He is the main character in the second generation of the book. It is important to keep in mind that Zech lived a fairly secluded life in the woods and had no real dating experience up to this point. Zech met Glenda Turner at a Christmas frolic, and was smitten with her.  They rode Zech's horse together, and he introduced her to his beloved dogs that sadly passes not long after this encounter. I believe that Zech was experiencing his "first love" stage, and was very much in the puppy love phase. He talks a lot about Glenda and her beauty and flowery smell. It seemed to me that Zech thought Glenda was too good for him. He makes a lot of comments on her beauty, but not much about their personalities meshing. He also wonders why Glenda - such a beautiful girl - would choose him of all ...
