Site Visit to Kingsley Plantation

Image
Today, I went and toured the Kingsley Plantation with my fiancĂ©. We went and visited in the early afternoon and greatly enjoyed all of the history we learned. Prior to this visit, I had no idea that there was a former slave plantation within Jacksonville city limits. We toured the kitchen area, the sleeping quarters for both Anna and Zephaniah Kingsley, the barn, and slave quarters. The most interesting (and upsetting) fact that I learned was the story of Anna Madgigine Jai (Kingsley). How she was brought from the Senegal as a slave, became involved in the running of the plantation, freed, and then acquired her own land and slaves.  We spent an hour and a half walking and touring the grounds, talking to the park guide, and reading the many plaques. The ride in was on a long, bumpy dirt road that I wasn’t sure my car could handle!  I loved getting out into nature and learning more about the history of Florida. I’m going to recommend this to all of my friends and family to come ...

A Land Remembered - My Review So Far

Image
I am only a few chapters into A Land Remembered by Patrick Smith, and so far I am really loving it. Chapter two introduces a few new characters. One being Tobias, his wife Emma and their son Zech. It seems that they are not very wealthy, and the chapter starts out with wild hogs coming and ruining their garden. Things take a turn when they get some unexpected visitors. While Tobias was cutting wood to repair the fence around their garden, three Seminole Indians came up behind him. He was startled at first, but soon realized the Indians did not mean any harm. They were extremely hungry and needed rest. Tobias offered to take them back to his home and give them some food to eat. They were very appreciative, but they were reluctant to go back because they were being followed. Apparently, they had killed a calf to eat, and they were unaware that it belonged to someone. These men were out for revenge, and they eventually caught up to Tobias and the Seminole Indians. They came on horseback w...

Name: Brittany Johnson        (40 total points) (4) Cite your Article (in proper APA format): Gannon, M., & Gannon, M. (2018). Chapter 2. In The history of Florida (pp. 18–40). essay, University Press of Florida.  Focus Questions: (1) Who is the author?   Michael Gannon (10) One argument presented is that Historic Accounts are not always cut & dry/ certain.  Discuss 2 examples within this chapter that supports this idea.  (pg 18.28) One example of this is the Fountain of youth and another was the expedition from Havana. The fountain of youth was not mentioned in Juan Ponce’s charter which thoroughly explained the purpose of his voyage. There was also a lot of discussion regarding where the ships from Hernando De Soto’s expedition made landfall.  Some people speculated that it was at Tampa Bay, some thought Charlotte Harbor, and some thought it was San Carlos Bay.  (1) Explore the discussion of the Fountain of Yo...

All About Brittany

Image
Hello!   My name is Brittany and I have lived in Jacksonville, FL my entire life. I have had a love/hate relationship with Florida since I was young. I love that we live right by the beach, but I hate sand getting everywhere. I love that we have such sunny weather, but I hate being too hot and sweaty. One thing I have always adored and never hated about Florida is the Florida State University Seminoles. Ever since I could walk and talk, I have been a self-proclaimed FSU fan. I could already spell "Florida" when I got to Kindergarten just from knowing the Florida State chant. My aunt is alumni, my fiancĂ© went to FSU and his sister is currently attending there as well! Because I grew up here, Florida history has always been a part of my education. I have been on field trips to St. Augustine and visited the Old Jail or the Fountain of Youth many times. I am excited to take this course because I want to dive deeper and understand parts of Florida history that I haven't heard ...
