Focus Questions:
(1) Who is the author?
Michael Gannon

(10) One argument presented is that Historic Accounts are not always cut & dry/ certain.  Discuss 2 examples within this chapter that supports this idea.  (pg 18.28)

One example of this is the Fountain of youth and another was the expedition from Havana. The fountain of youth was not mentioned in Juan Ponce’s charter which thoroughly explained the purpose of his voyage. There was also a lot of discussion regarding where the ships from Hernando De Soto’s expedition made landfall.  Some people speculated that it was at Tampa Bay, some thought Charlotte Harbor, and some thought it was San Carlos Bay.

(1) Explore the discussion of the Fountain of Youth and its validity (pg 19).

The fountain of youth was likely not a driving motive for Ponce De Leon to explore Florida. He did not mention it in any of his recorded correspondence about the expedition. He was most likely after gold and the power that comes with conquering a new land.

(5) Describe political or social policy mentioned within the chapter.  Be sure to include:
Old Spain rulers/ruling bodies: Kings and priests.
New World rulers/ruling bodies: Indian chiefs, Spanish explorers, and Spanish friars
adelantado: The name Juan Ponce got in Spain. This was a title meaning self-financing conqueror and direct representative of the King.
Requirirmiento: Spanish Requirement on 1513. It allowed the Spanish to take the territories of the “New World.”
New Laws of 1542: Regulations by the King of Spain that gave the natives more rights.

(1) What animal was introduced to Florida by de Soto?
The pig was introduced to Florida by de Soto.

(2)What is the “microbial invasion”?
The diseases that De Soto and other explorers from the “Old World” brought to Florida. Because the natives hadn’t been exposed to this before, they lacked immunity and many of them died. These diseases include Smallpox, Measles and others.

(5) Present reasons supporting settlement of Florida AND arguments against the settlement of Florida based on the text of Chapter 2
Reasons to support settlement of Florida include gaining riches and conquering land. The Spanish believed that they would find gold and they would have the pride of discovering a new land. On the other hand, their explorations ruined the native communities that were already established and living in Florida. The diseases they brought from Europe killed many native people.

(1) What do you find most interesting about this article?
I personally thought the discussion surrounding the Fountain of Youth was very interesting. I always thought that discovering the Fountain of Youth was the main reason that Ponce De Leon came to Florida, so it is very interesting to learn that this may not be the case at all!
